  • If you feel like you are not challenged enough or simply do not enjoy work anymore, it is time for a professional reorientation.

  • Changing jobs, pursuing continuing professional development or coaching: This article will tell you what your career might look like in the future.

What happens if your job feels like a dead end?

Your Monday morning mood is a good barometer. If your mood and motivation are very low on Mondays, this is a sign that you should have a think about your current job.

If you no longer enjoy your job, then you are not alone. The results of a recent study* show a clear trend: Over the last ten years, job satisfaction among professionals in Switzerland has fallen from 84% to 71%.

There is a range of reasons for resenting your job. One thing is clear: Anyone who keeps having to do the same things and experiences little variety in their day-to-day work can quickly fall into a rut. In the long term, a lack of challenging work is not a positive situation to be in, even if the work seems easy in these scenarios.

In the short term, there are essentially three ways to get yourself out of a career rut.

Changing jobs can work wonders. With a new environment, new challenges, and a new boss, things suddenly seem much better again. View current job opportunities that match your profile. Who knows, maybe in three months' time you'll be back to saying "thank goodness it's Monday!"

For some people, changing jobs doesn't go far enough and they need to review their current skills profile. Perhaps it's time to continue your professional development? Time to deepen your skills in your preferred specialist area and that way feel more fulfilled in your role? By continuing your professional development you'll be able to perform your tasks more capably and more successfully. This can have a positive impact on your salary, increase your job satisfaction, and raise your profile within the team.

Undertaking CPD and obtaining career advice are a sustainable investment in your future that always pays off.

Okay, so I should do some CPD. But that's easier said than done. What is CPD exactly? There are as many options available as grains of sand on a beach, but many people are too overwhelmed by choice to decide how they want to redirect their career. This is exactly where coaches, also known as careers advisers, can help. They understand your current professional situation, interests, values, and abilities, and will work with you to reorient your career in line with your needs and interests. Stop for a moment, find out what you really want, and dare yourself to try something new.

Even if the cost of CPD or career advice seems high at first, they are a sustainable investment in your future that always pays off.
